I purchased this product 3 weeks ago. I chose it because I prefer a warm mist humidifier and did not want to be bothered with filters. It has been great. If you follow a few basic steps, keeping it clean and running at top performance is not a big issue.

1. Empty the tank whenever unit is going to be off for more than a couple hours. I forgot to do this once and it formed lots more scale and took a lot more time and effort to remove it.

2. If you do not use distilled water (which I don’t), descale the heating chamber with white vinegar every day or two. White vinegar is cheap. I don’t have to mess with gallons of distilled water bottles or filters for my faucet. I live in a very hard-water area and this method has worked for me: When I get up, I unplug the unit, empty the tank, and put vinegar in the heating chamber. By the time I’ve showered and dressed, the mineral deposits have begun to fall away from the heating unit. It only takes a bit of prodding to remove the stragglers. I then wipe with a cloth. If I’m going to be home, I refill and start the unit. If I’m going to be gone, I put everything in the dish drainer & it’s ready to reassemble and use when I get home. This amounts to about 5 minutes of effort daily. Once a week I disinfect with the bleach solution as recommended in the manual.

I hope this helps. Using the above methods have made this the simplest humidifier to run and keep clean that I’ve ever had. It also looks like the washer in the tank cap can be purchased at any hardware store, an issue I’ve had with previous humidifiers. It would be nice if the product came with with a replacement washer and gasket but it’s not a perfect world.

Last month I purchased another unit that ran out of water in the middle of the night. This one does NOT have that problem. Even on the highest setting it’s running about a day and a half! Beautiful.

The ‘on’ light is way too bright but a piece of black tape fixed that. You can’t see any light from the germ light (that’s good). It does it’s germ killing on the water before it hits the hot plate. I’m not sure how needed this is considering it’s generating steam but ‘perhaps’ (I don’t really know) it may reduce the gunk amount in the cleanup. It came with 3 mineral pads that simply lay on a hot plate (use just 1 pad). Note they are the ’small’ round pads. I see two sizes on Amazon.

No other light comes from the unit. Gurgling isn’t as bad as some other units I’ve tried but there is no way around a bit of gurgling.

The TWO water side tanks can both be filled or just one. Lifting one tank off the unit while the other is full causes NO problems, water doesn’t gush out. It is big so check the size.

The only ‘cons’ are the way too bright on light (easy fix, tape) and when empty the plastic tanks can easily fall while moving the unit. They don’t ‘lock’ in place and are quite light when empty.

I haven’t tried a lower steam setting but there is a constantly variable control for steam (not just low and high).
So far I love the unit and I let it run all night!

I purchased this humidifier about 2 months ago. I am pleased with it. I tried 3 others before purchasing this one. The ones I tried before were noisy. If you set this one on high it is too noisy, but on low it is very quiet. Yes, the water does make gurgling sounds but only now and then, and it’s not that bad. I am considering buying another one, because when you like a product they always discontinue it or “improve” it.

In addition, I like this humidifier because it is an evaporative, no mist, no white dust. Also, I like that it has no light on it to disturb me while I sleep. I use it at night only. I don’t know how much humidity it produces, but it keeps my throat moist all night. The tank is very easy to fill and position on the unit, and I only have to fill it up every other night. The filter has not needed to be changed yet. In trying different units, I was surprised that so many were so poorly designed and noisy. I was so thankful to find this one. I recommend it highly. Get two while you’re at it. At the time of this writing, The Home Depot has them online for .97. That’s how much I paid.

I received this item just before Christmas 2009. Our house was so dry I was slowly pruning. At 1500 sq.ft. on the main floor with 9 foot ceilings it keeps us quite comfortable and does the job. Have been running it straight since early December and no mechanical problems. Be aware of the following:

LOOKS: This cabinet model looks better on the website than in person. It is a darker brown than shown (not as orange) but still a pleasing colour. It is made of plastic and has a woodgrain pattern, but doesn’t quite live up to getting away with it, mostly because of the slightly warped top vent (yes, vents from top, cannot put stuff on top of here without blocking the ventilation). Ours comes out of the plastic hinge at the back and does not seat well in all grooves, but probably not noticeable to guests. It needs to sit with it’s back against a wall, as the back of the unit is not covered by a nice woodgrain cover, although it is brown plastic. You also notice the black filter hooked on the outside back sucking “filtered” air into the unit. My favourite part is it’s on four wheels, so it is very easy to move and vacuum around on my wood floors. Unless you have shag rug, it should also be fairly easy to move on a short pile rug.

CONTROLS: It has two dials “humidity control” and “variable airflow”. The humidity control does not go by numbers (i.e. 50% – 75%) so you don’t really know the current level of your home; however it does allow you to set low / comfort zone / high arond the dial, and will toggle off when it reaches the desired humidity level set. We set ours 1/4 turn above the comfort zone and that works well. Note that setting it on high still doesn’t peel your wallpaper, you can’t even see the humidity coming out like you can on an ultrasonic BUT it does do the trick, as confirmed by the empty bottles I’m constantly refilling. The variable airflow dial goes from OFF/COMFORT ZONE (which starts immediately from off) to HIGH. This unit is LOUD!! When they say comfort zone they mean for your EARS. I only put it up to 12o’clock position (medium, I guess) when I’m out of the room, and any higher is just noisy with HIGH being like a battering ram. The comfort zone is best and since we situate it right by our kitchen/nook and living room we keep it low. (I know what you’re thinking – we have taken it apart and rechecked our setup, it is correct with nothing unusual accidentally left inside, no real reason it should be this loud. Only thing I can think of is plastic rumbling on four wheels with the echo of our hardwood floors – maybe it won’t be as much of an issue for you).

BOTTLES: There are two large 2.5 gallon bottles that rest on the left and right of inside cabinet. They are easy to fill and the unit comes with a tube to help you fill from your tap. Also comes with one small bottle of bacteriostatic additive to get you going. We use distilled water so we don’t have the hard water build up in the bottom reservoir, you may want to use soft/distilled if you can get it or put an additive in to dissolve minerals. The bottles have handles on both top and bottom so when you turn them over to place them in it is easy to handle the weight. We don’t spill any water when doing this and it’s a great design. Also good are two “refill” lights that light up orange when each bottle is empty. They are easy to see through the grill on top as you’re walking by, but not obtrusive. Very easy to refill while the other still is going, no need to turn unit off.

NOISE and PRICE: It’s the only big drawback, and the price at 0 USD is steep for what it is. Would love to see real wood for that price, as there really isn’t much to the unit but a small fan, filter, and plastic.

All in all, there aren’t alot of different makes on the market to choose from, especially ones that don’t look utilitarian. This will do what you’re looking for but be aware if you have unusual dryness in your area and need to pump humidity with the control on HIGH, the noise from this baby will stop you from hearing your baby monitor and could keep you and baby up at night; otherwise, sleep soundly in the “Comfort Zone”. I didn’t realize how much I liked this humidifier until I bought a different one! I bought one of thes a year ago and chose it because of the price and the large capacity (6 gallons) and what appeared to be a simple filling method. It was easy to fill, and the digital display and controls are simple. It is supposed to cover 1700 square feet but I eventually decided I would like to have a second humidifier to keep the humidity higher and refill less frequently. I decided to add the Essick Air H12-400 3-speed humidifier as my second one. It was a nightmare to fill! I’ll save the details for my review of that model. I packed it up & sent it back the next day and ordered another Essick 821000. I use 2 2-gallon buckets to fill this unit & it is very simple and quick. No bottles or hoses to worry about. Since I have 2 I don’t have to refill as often. The high setting is a little loud but I only us it at night or when I’m not home to get the humidity up quickly. I always us a bacterial water treatment for humidifiers so I never have mold or odors. This unit is also narrow so it fits between pieces of furniture or in an inconspicuous place in the room. I recommend it over any model with bottles and hoses!
